NGO QUYEN’S TOMB AND TEMPLE

The relic was built on a high hill, called Cam hill, facing the East. The temple was built at the top, about 100m from the tomb. In front of the tomb is a wide field between two hillsides; a source of water called Hum Pond flowing into Tich River; Besides that, there is Ho Gam hill, the legend said that in the past, Ngo Quyen used to play with his friends, herded buffaloes, mowed grass and practiced martial arts in his childhood. This is probably the most beautiful location of the old Duong Lam hamlet.

After the big victory to defeat of the Nam Han army on Bach Dang river in late 938, early 939, the National Hero Ngo Quyen decided to proclaim as the King, founded Ngo Dynasty, chose Co Loa as the capital, restored the country built from the era of Hung King, An Duong Vuong, creating a great turning point of the country's history, completely ending the Northern domination period that lasted more than 1000 years, opening the era of long independence and the splendid development of Dai Viet nation.

Ngo Quyen's Bach Dang victory has great historical significance, a brilliant milestone that ended more than 1,000 years of Chinese domination, destroying the "assimilation" scheme of the Northern feudalism, opening a new era in the national history - the era of development of an independent and autonomous nation in the country of Vietnam.

The historic Bach Dang victory was the decisive basis for the spring of 939, Ngo Quyen abolished the post of Tiet Do Su, proclaimed as the King, founded Ngo Dynasty, and set up a capital in Co Loa with the meaning of continuing the cause of national construction during the reign of Hung King and An Duong Vuong, building an independent state in our country. Along with his enthronement, Ngo Quyen set up the mandarinate, rituals and court costume, ordained up a queen... opening a new page in the history of Vietnam.

With the glorious victory in 938 on Bach Dang river and the self-acclamation of the King, the establishment of Ngo Dynasty reigned over the country from 939 to 944, Ngo Quyen was historically honored as the man who revived Vietnam the second only to the Founding Kingdom - Hung King.

Ngo Quyen Temple in Duong Lam was built long ago and has been restored many times. The most recent repair was during the reign of King Tu Duc (1848 - 1883). The temple is quite modest in size, including: Nghi Mon, Ta mac, Huu mac, Dai Bai and Harem. In the middle of the Dai Bai temple, there was a horizontal lacquered board with four Chinese words “Tiền vương bất vong” (The previous king never died). The two sides have exhibits on the identity and career of Ngo Quyen and the historic Bach Dang victory. In the middle of the harem, there are the altar and the statue of Ngo Quyen.

In front of the temple, overlooking the area of Hum Pond, is the tomb of King Ngo Quyen built in the 27th year of Tu Duc (1874) and restored in the second year of Minh Menh (1821). The tomb is built as a covered stele house, about 1.5m high. In the middle of the tomb is the throne, in which there are stone steles inscribed with the four Chinese characters “Tiền Ngô Vương Lăng” (Tomb of King Ngo Quyen). In particular, in the relics population, there is an ancient streblus row - it is said that Ngo Quyen tied his elephants and horses here - which has been recognized as a "heritage tree".

Every year, on August 14th of the lunar calendar (the anniversary of the death of King Ngo Quyen), people in this region come here to commemorate his merits - the king who "opened the country and proclaimed as the king", ending more than 1,000 years of Chinese domination, opening a new era of independence and autonomy for national history.

2019 is the 1080th anniversary of Ngo Quyen's throning and placing capital in Co Loa. On April 20, the City Party Committee, the People's Council, the People's Committee and the Hanoi Fatherland Front Committee solemnly held the 1080th anniversary of Ngo Quyen's throning and placing capital in Co Loa (939-2019). Rituals are conducted at Co Loa Relic Area and the temple and tomb of Ngo Quyen in Duong Lam. This is an activity that clearly shows the tradition of gratitude of our people to the great meritorious people of the country, thereby educating the good traditions to the generations of the Capital, especially the younger generation.
